Communicating Medical Information Online: The Case of Adolescent Health Websites

2020

In recent times, our understanding and practice of public health has been increasingly guided by technological advances generally based on governmental decisions (Green et al. 2009). Not only does the growth of a public system for protecting health hinge upon scientific discovery and dissemination of medical knowledge, but also the World Wide Web has considerably changed the health communication environment. This paper considers the online health information addressed to adolescents. Given that young people have difficulty accessing traditional health services, in theory, the Internet might offer them a more confidential and convenient access to an unprecedented level of information about a…

Creativity, Comparison and Sharing in the Co-Creation of the Communication Campaign

2022

In the fourth chapter the evolution of Oltre's online campaign will be transversally analysed, focusing on the path of awareness acquisition by the second-generation youth involved in the co-creation process of the campaign. Afterwards, we will be analysing in detail the backstage of the creation of content. Through the participatory method, we will be highlighting how the content creators of our campaign selected the themes and the perspective from which to deal with them. We will be underlying how the content creators dismantled the circulating representation and built a counter-narrative or an alternative narrative and converted the idea, through a process of creative co-construction, in…

Marinin hallituksen ministereihin Twitterissä suunnattu vihapuhe

2022

On the conversation between female videobloggers and commentators

2021

Darba auto…

Can online communication strengthen the relationship of EU with young citizens in Finland?

2010

Introduction: In the last five years the EU has increased its authority on various issues, as well as its visibility. Nevertheless, the impact that the European Union (EU) has had on the lives of citizens in its Member States is often underestimated, and support towards its institutions has declined in recent years, especially among young people. The Eurobarometer survey of December 2005 (EB, 2005) made clear that only 55 percent of European youth aged between twenty and twenty-four years old thinks that in five years’ time they would like the EU to play a more important role in their lives. The same study indicated that only 40 percent of youth feel that their voice is heard in the EU. If …

Talking about Migration: the Online Discourse of Some Italian Political Party Leaders

2020

The aims of the article are to deconstruct the frames of migration crisis embedded on the official web sites, social networks and blogs belonging to the leaders of the main Italian political parties, positioned on different points of the left or right political spectrum, in the period 2015-2016. According to the relevance of the Italian context, we are also going to study the position of a party that can be considered a post-ideological movement that represents itself as outside of a traditional political spectrum: the Five-star Movement. We analysed text, images and videos published on the Internet 2.0 sites in order to show the legacy of colonialism that was characterized by the ambivalen…

Adolescents’ online communication and well-being : Findings from the 2018 health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study

2022

Background: Digital transformation has influenced all areas of adolescents’ lives, including the ways adolescents maintain friendships. Interpersonal communication is one of the most common activities while online. This study examined the associations between different forms of online communication behavior and well-being. Materials and methods: Data were collected from Finnish adolescents as part of the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study in 2018. The participants were 3…

Audit Institutions in the European Union: Public Service Promotion, Environmental Engagement and COVID Crisis Communication through Social Media

2020

This article analyses Social Media (SM) use as a promotion tool for public institutions in the public audit sector. The authors propose a quantitative model to assess online engagement of 94 European audit institutions (national and regional) with their stakeholders, based on SM and web activity metrics of these institutions, with a focus on pressing matters such as environment, sustainability and the current COVID pandemic. The proposed model may be applied to assess organisations from any public or private sector. The research finds that SM presence helps audit institutions to promote their services more effectively by directing their stakeholders to extensive content on the audit institu…

Science, Its Publics and New Media. Reflecting on the Present and Future of Science Communication.

2013

Scientific journalism faces the challenge to adapt not only to new formats but also to new information exchange dynamics. New online platforms, making it easier to access and produce scientific content, are forcing science publics to evolve. The online environment has turned into science communication reality, and both scientists and communicators must adapt to it. This paper discusses these changes and their implications for science journalism and an informed citizenry.
